Chalung Do to Nidder is a moderately difficult trek that lies in Leh. The trek offers you with exhilaration, awe-inspiring views, pleasant weather, tranquility and a wonderful experience altogether. The journey starts from Leh, you’ll have to drive till Chalung-do. It is going to be a pleasant drive along the pristine Indus River. High altitude landscape, nomads and pleasant weather characterize the trek. You can also visit the famous hot springs in Chumathang which falls on your trail.

The route to be followed is Leh to Chalung Do to Doksha followed by Lingmar and finally Nidder.

The duration of the trip would be 4 days. The best time to visit the trek is from mid of June to September. The highest point that you’ll trek to is Lungmar-la which is at an altitude of enormous 5,390 meters. The trek is not much difficult, so you can take the challenge with your family.


Day 1: Leh to Chalungdo - 6 hrs.

The first day of your journey starts with a pleasant drive along the river Indus from Leh to Chalungdo. It takes 4 hours for you to drive and reach your destination. On your way falls Chumathang, this is famous for curing many ailments and skin diseases. You can stop and Chumathang and have a dip in the hot spring.

Chumathang is located at a distance of 2 kilometers from the hot springs, so you can visit the Hamlet. As soon as you reach Chalungdo, go 3 kilometers behind Mahe Bridge and on the way to Tsomiri and Tsokar, you can find a number of Camping grounds that lie at an altitude of 4,400 meters at River Paldong. Camp in any of those grounds and stay there overnight.

Day 2: Chalungdo to Doksa- 3 hrs.

The day is full of picturesque view and stimulating experiences for you. What can be more amazing than getting up in the lap of nature? You get to actually experience this in your morning at Chalungdo. Have your breakfast and leave for trekking. Initially, you will find a lot of bushes in your path but as soon as you climb upwards their numbers keep on reducing. Then climbing higher and higher, you’ll find a small river where you’ll find great spots for camping.

It is better that you camp at a Doksa at an elevation of 4,775 meters. Doksa is a beautiful place that lies on right side of the valley and you can have a walk into a side-valley from here. Stay there overnight and take ample of rest.

Day 3: Doksa via Lungmar-la to Camping- 7 hrs.

This is the most thrilling day of the trip as it is the day when you’ll climb upon the highest point of the trek. The day starts with following the river and climbing higher and higher. The landscape starts turning wider and wider and you get the essence of being in Changthang.

As you forge forward, the river stops and you have to climb higher up to 5,390 meters on the Lungmar-la pass. This is the highest point on your trek. Feeling of ecstasy and thrill will surround you as soon as you’ll reach the point. Stop there for some time and capture the moment to cherish later. The view is simply breathtaking! Towards the right you can see the majestic snow-covered crest of Chalung, Changser Kangi, and Lungser Kangri, you will also sight the beautiful lakes of Kyun Tso.

To go downwards, you can either descend down through loose sand or you can jump down towards a small gorge. There is a point at an elevation of 4,820 meters where there is some water and it serves as a spot for camping. You can stay there overnight and accumulate your energies for the next day.

Day 4: Camping point to Niddar- 4 hrs.

The day takes you down through scenic landscapes; you’ll come across an enchanting gorge, beautiful plateau and a huge valley at an elevation of 4,390 meters. keep walking towards the left side until you reach a small village of Tsongkar Karu on 4,265 meters. The hamlet of Tsongkar Karu has only 16 houses and a minuscule school. You can stop there for some time and click some snaps. Soon after half an hour of walk from Tsongkar Karu, you’ll reach a slightly bigger village called Niddar.

It has a middle school and a monastery. You can even find few eateries where you can fill your stomach. There is a road from Niddar that goes up to Chunur, you can either go there by foot or use a car. There is a camping spot in Niddar that is situated on a pleasant meadow lying just before the village. You can camp on the spot and stay there overnight.

Day 5: Niddar to Leh.

Wake up early in the morning and enjoy a pleasant drive from Niddar to Leh. You can also visit few important landmarks that fall in between of your path.

You will reach Leh by evening, You can plan your onward journey anytime after you reach Leh since the trip ends as soon as you reach Leh.
