Trekking is any way the best way to soothe your mind, check your physical endurance and mental ability to get along with difficulties and get to the destination finally.

Darcha – Padum trek is one of the trekking paths that lead towards the ultimate solitude and beauty of the mighty Himalayas. Starting from Manali, the route includes the snowy, rocky mountains, soiled muddy path, turquoise blue stream and the warm people of the far away villages. It took around 10-15 days to reach from Delhi Padum via Darcha and return, depending on the weather conditions and other factors.


Itinerary

Day 1: Delhi to Manali

On the first day of our journey, we’ll reach from Delhi to Manali by AC coach Volvo or by car. It is an overnight journey. The road from Delhi to Manali is just awesome including the farms and fields both sides, planes, hills, and finally the mountain. After reaching Manali we’ll check in into the hotel for some rest.

Day 2: Manali to Keylong to Darcha

The next day after freshen up, the journey will begin to rediscover the beauty of the valley and mountains beyond Manali. After checking the necessary stuff, we’ll head towards Keylong. We’ll drive through the Rohtang La. Crossing the lush green valley, ‘babbling and burbling’ of Chenab, which is the confluence of Chandra and Bhaga rivers, we’ll reach Keylong, the administrative center of Lahaul and Spiti district in the Himachal Pradesh state of India.

We’ll not stay at Keylong. After having some snacks and freshen up, we’ll continue our journey towards Darcha. The drive is almost 30 Kms and it will be through the Jispa village. Darcha is located on the Manali-Leh road.

Day 3: Darcha to Palamu

From Darcha, we’ll take a diversion to Chika Village and Palamu. Our base camp is at Palamu and we’ll stay there overnight. This is an easy trek through roads. Palamu is a magnificent small village on the lap of the mountains. On the way, there are Chika and Rarik monasteries, one of the best sights till now. There is a very small stream near the base camp, and the village is situated at around 11,000 feet above the sea level.

Day 4: Palamu to Zanskar Sumdo

Our day will start today with a trek leaving the Palamu base camp. First, we’ll cross the river through a hanging pull and head towards Zanskar Sumdo. The beautiful surroundings and views of the mountains will mesmerize you. We’ll climb the mountain trail on the left bank of the river to reach our next destination Zanskar Sumdo. Zanskar Sumdo is located at around 4,100 meters from sea level and the trek takes almost 5 hours. We’ll stay overnight at the Zanskar Sumdo.

Day 5: Zanskar Sumdo to Chumik Nakpo

Leaving behind the beautiful Zanskar Sumdo, we’ll head towards Chumik Nakpo today. The distance is 14 km and it is a steep climbing through the mountains. The blue sky, grayish brown mountains, and the colorful view will leave you awestruck on the way. Chumik Nakpo is situated at the 4,640 meters from the sea level. It takes roughly 6-7 hours from Zanskar Sumdo to reach Chumik Nakpo. We’ll stay here overnight at the camp.

Day 6: Chumik Nakpo to Shingo La to Lhakhang

Today, we’ll climb to the Shingo La pass through the rocky trail of mountains. The road ascends through the steep trail and sometimes encounters snow all around. The green valley is left behind. The Himalayan streams come across while trudging through the trail. Walking through the rocks and streams, we’ll reach the Shingo La pass to witness a mesmerizing view of the glowing glacier. After staying some time with the beautiful Shingo La pass, we’ll walk towards the next side of the pass to reach Lhakhang, out next destination. It will take 3 hours to reach Lhakhang from Shingo La pass and we’ll stay overnight at the camp.

Day 7: Lhakhang to Kargyak

The best and easy part of the trek is today. We’ll leave the Lhakhang camp early in the morning and will start our journey to Kargyak. The trek involves walking through the valley most of the time. The liquid souls of the mountains, many streams are there along the path. It takes 7-8 hours to reach Kargyak, the first human village on the way and this village is actually having modern facilities like satellite phones. We’ll stay at the camp beside the village overnight.

Day 8: Kargyak to Purne

Today we’ll start early for our next part of the journey. Bidding goodbye to the warm villagers of Kargyak village we’ll start trudging towards Purne, located at about 3,700 meters from the sea level. We’ll walk through Buddhist villages and monasteries through the road. Following the right bank of the stream, we’ll rich Tanze and Theta village. The blossoms, flowers and barley fields touch the feet of the Himalayas here. On the way there are small bridges over the streams, climb through the rocky trails and cross small villages. From Yal, we’ll descend steeply towards a large bridge. After crossing the bridge we’ll reach Purne. We’ll stay overnight at the camp.

Day 9: Purne to Pipula

In Purne, some tourists and trekkers prefer to stay another night to visit the Phuktal Monastery, the biggest and oldest monastery of the region. We’ll head towards our next destination today to Pipula. The path includes too much ascending and descending and it involves some steep climbing on the way. It is the most difficult phase of the trekking. The distance is 15-16 km and it takes more than 6-7 hours to reach there. The landscape is gray here with brown rocky mountains and stones everywhere. Staying at camp overnight at Pipula.

Day 10: Pipula to Padum to Kargil to Leh

Most of the tourists prefer to trek to Radu from Pipula. We’ll start trekking towards Ichar, a small village today. It will take 2-3 hours and the path is moderate. We’ll wait at Ichar to get our BRO trucks which will take us from Pipula to Padum via Radu. Ichar to Radu distance is 8-9 km and Radu to Padum is 20 km. The landscape is very monotonous here. Padum is a small town and was the old capital of Zanskar.

We’ll drive to Kargil next from Padum. From Kargil, we’ll drive further to Leh. On the way, we’ll visit some oldest monasteries and will experience mesmerizing views all wound Leh and Kargil. We’ll visit the famous Changoo Lake and the Changoo village at Leh. Kargil to Leh is 6-7 hours’ drive. The road has the famous magnetic road. We’ll stay overnight at Leh.

Day 11: Leh to Delhi

Our beautiful journey ends today. We’ll take a flight from Leh to Delhi.
