Gaumukh-Tapovan trek delivers an unmatched trekking experience and presents the travelers with some really mesmerizing views. Gaumukh Glacier is the source of the gushing Ganga River and the sight of the vast glacier is unimaginable.

The route takes you through a number of exciting destinations and each has a beauty of its own. Bhojbasa is an intermediate stop in the trail that offers incredible views of the Bhagirathi Sisters. Tapovan, on the other hand, is the most enjoyable spot in the journey.

The compelling views of the Mt. Shivling from Tapovan cannot be explained in words. Mt. Shivling can be observed from the very base to the summit at Tapovan, and the sight is outstanding. The entirety of a majestic peak observed from so close range leaves you in awe and really uplifts your spirits within. The 8 days itinerary is ideally planned to deliver you an unmatched trekking extravaganza.

Itinerary

Day 1: Haridwar to Gangotri (3,065 meters / 10,055 feet)

Haridwar is considered as a place of prime religious importance. Located in the adventurous Uttarakhand state, Haridwar witnesses a huge number of tourists every year. Most of the people come here to cleanse their soul from within and rediscover what the true meaning of life is. Haridwar is lined along the banks of the Gangotri River and the famous evening ‘Aarti’ offered to the same is a delight of a sight. From Haridwar, you will be starting the journey towards Gangotri.

The incredible setting of Gangotri, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains amidst the Deodar Forests makes your stay here a really enjoyable one. You will stay the night in Gangotri.

Day 2: Gangotri (3,065 meters / 10,055 feet) to Chirbasa (3,585 meters / 11,761 feet).

Chirbasa is located at an elevation of 11,761 feet and the 8 KMs journey from Gangotri takes about 4 hours in total. Around 2 KMs into the journey along the market area of Gangotri, you will reach the Forest Check Post. From this point, you get to amaze at the stunning Sudarshan Parbat and from here the journey ahead passes through many cascading waterfalls and streams.

Follow the trail ahead to reach a boulder zone and as you look back the Sudarshan Parbat will no longer be visible. Keep walking ahead for another 30 min to reach Chirbasa. Ideal for acclimatization, Chirbasa will be your stop for the night before starting ahead with the journey.

Day 3: Chirbasa (3,585 meters / 11,761 feet) to Gaumukh (3,795 meters / 12,450 feet) via Bhojbasa.

The moderate walk today leads you to the magnificent destination Gaumukh at 13,021 feet. It takes around 5 hours to complete the distance of 10 km today. The walk begins with exhilarating views of the distant snow-capped peaks for about 40 mins to reach a ridge. The ascending trail from here presents you with the glimpses of the Bhagirathi Peak, walk on the rocky terrain through the landslides prone area to reach the widest point of the region, Bhojbasa. Enjoy the incredible views of Gaumukh from Bhojbasa.

From Bhojbasa the leisure walk on an easy trail for about a couple of hours leads you to Gaumukh. The bewildering views of Gaumukh Glacier are really a sight worth falling in love with. The campsite where you will be spending the night is equally enticing and you will really enjoy resting the night here.

Day 4: Gaumukh (3,795 meters / 12,450 feet) to Tapovan (4,329 meters / 14,202 feet)

The difficult journey today takes you to an elevation of 14,202 feet, Tapovan. It is 3 hours long walk on a rough terrain of 5 KMs to Tapovan.

The journey requires you to walk on a glacial moraine traversing the Gangotri Glacier. The initial trail for about an hour takes you through the Terminal Moraine till you reach a rock face. The walk directly to Tapovan begins from here.

The trail runs adjacent to the Akash-Ganga Glacial Stream flowing down the rock face. Cross the area at the earliest to avoid any discomfort caused by landslides. The stream needs to be crossed and the walk must be continued along the stream to reach the destination. The vast level ground of Tapovan appears an hour later, prepare to spend the night in Tapovan.

Day 5: Rest

The incredible scenery of Tapovan lies in the captivating Mt. Shivling rising from the ground. The high altitude alpine meadow of Tapovan lies at the foothills of the majestic Mt. Shivling. As you chose to explore the 2 KMslong area, you will be amazed at the sight of a huge mountain rising from the ground. The entirety of the Mt. Shivling is the prime attraction of Tapovan.

From Tapovan you can choose to experience a short hike up to Neelataal. The small glacial lake Neelataal is a 100 m hike away from Tapovan. You also get the chance to witness some bewildering views of Mt. Shivling, Tapovan Campsite, Gangotri Glacier, Meru Parvat, and Nandanvan. Enjoy the raw excellence of nature before descending down to Tapovan to stay the night.

Day 6: Tapovan (4,329 meters / 14,202 feet) to Bhojbasa (3,585 meters / 11,761 feet).

It is a tiresome journey today as you will be continuously descending overlooking the intermediate stop at Gaumukh. The 10 km long walk takes about 6 hours to complete. Though you will be walking on a descending trail, it is advised to walk with caution as the tired legs can play tricky.

Follow the retracing trail that leads you to Gaumukh around 5 hours later. The walk from Gaumukh to Bhojbasa takes around an hour on a fairly easy trail. The setting of Bhojbasa with the gushing Bhagirathi River flowing adjacent and scattered vegetation throughout is really enjoyable. Spend a quaint night in Bhojbasa.

Day 7: Bhojbasa to Gangotri

Today’s trek is mostly done on a flat terrain and thus it does not become heavily tiresome. Though the walk is as long as 13 km and takes around 8 hours, the fairly easier walk makes the journey an enjoyable one. On the descending walk to Gangotri, you will be skipping the intermediate stop at Chirbasa.

As you reach 10,055 feet elevation of Gangotri you can choose to spend the final day exploring the beautiful region. Gangotri has many incredible locations ideal for exploration. Indulge in interactions with the locals and have a deeper insight into the lifestyle of the region. Spend the final night in Gangotri.

Day 8: Gangotri to Haridwar

The exciting journey filled with great adventure and thrill comes to an end as you set out to travel back to Haridwar. Today you will be on a relaxing journey back to Haridwar and the beautiful memories of the majestic Mt. Shivling and mesmerizing Gangotri Glacier will travel back with you. Enjoy the final ride and do not limit yourself in experiencing more adventurous trekking journeys.
