The Lamayuru Padum trek is one surprising journey that packs a lot of amazement among the travelers and offers a great deal of joy throughout the journey. The journey begins with your arrival in Leh and from there a nonstop 13 days extravaganza delivering you the best of a trekking expedition. Each day of the trek takes you some of the incredible destinations around Leh and finally concludes at Padum.
The journey commences from the famed Lamayuru Monastery, offering you an insight into the rich culture, heritage, and traditions of the region. The grandeur of the Lamayuru Monastery is highly enjoyable and the destinations like Lingshet, Karsha, Padum, and Kargilis equally compelling. Day 1: Arrival in Leh.
A perfect gateway into nature, Leh is spot on destination for any adventure craving traveler. The vivid landscapes, nature’s extravaganza, snow-capped peaks, the vast Indus River, and above all the barren landscape, Leh has never failed to satisfy tourists with incredible sights. The Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is where you will be landing from Delhi.As you reach Leh, the first day of the journey will be spent exploring this incredible destination. Leh, also known as the cold desert is home to some really enchanting monasteries and palaces. The like of Leh Palace and Shey Gompa, beautiful monasteries like Thiksey Monastery and Hemis Monastery, and the most incredible, the Shanti Stupa are some of the really amazing sights to explore. Day 2: Leh to Lamayuru.
A profound monastery in the Leh Region, the journey to the Lamayuru Monastery is a fascinating experience. An enjoyable drive of around 7 hours stretching over a distance of 125 km, the road through the striking brilliance of nature is a sight to savor. The vivid landscapes of the Leh region are best enjoyed in this drive. The path leading to Lamayuru Monastery has a couple of famous intermediate stops at the other two most famous monasteries of the region. The Alchi Monastery and the Liker Monastery delivers an impeccable experience to the travelers. The guesthouse of the monastery is where you will be spending the night
Day 3: Lamayuru to Wanla.
The 3rd day of the itinerary marks the beginning of the trekking journey. The destination today is Wanla at an altitude of 3,250 meters and is quite an enjoyable walk. The relaxing walk begins on an easy terrain and runs for about 3 hours in total. Follow the stream in the eastern direction for about 20 minutes to reach a Chorten. Cross the Chorten to follow another stream to reach the Priktin La at 3,700 meters. The trail ahead from here drops down to a river at the Shilakung Valley. The road divides from here, while one leads to the extremely beautiful Zanskar Valley, the other one through Chortens and Mani Walls takes you to Wanla. Day 4: Wanla to Hanupatta
A long day awaits you as you will be walking for about 7 hours to reach the 3,970 meters mark at Hanupatta. Start the day early after breakfast and start on the trail in the eastern direction. The walk begins with a river crossing followed by a walk on the other side of a stream to get to the point where the road again splits into two directions. Avoid the trail leading to Semdoand Alchi.Take the trail leading to Hanupatta and cross a bridge and continue with the walk to reach the Hanupatta Gorge. The terrain is quite rough and tricky so approach with caution. A final crossing over a bridge and walking on the road to get to a narrow valley before by passing a stupa finally leads you to the Hanupatta. Prepare to spend the night here.
Day 5: Hanupatta to Photoskar via Sirsir La
Another long day in the journey, today you will be walking for around 7 hours to reach Photoskar Village, at an elevation of 4,050 meters. The walk begins on the trail running along the stream. Cross the tributaries of the stream and take the path running along another stream to reach the Sirsir La, at an astounding elevation of 4,850 meters. The trail descends from here and runs along another stream to finally take you to the Photoskar Village. Enjoy the picturesque beauty of nature all along the way, and as you reach the village, prepare to stay the night here
Day 6: Sirsir La to Singay La Base.
This trekking route is considered to be fairly difficult for first-time trekkers as each and every day the walk you need to cover is quite a lot. Today as well you will have to walk for around 8 hours to get to an elevation of 4,300 meters, the Singay La Base.
Start the walk out of the village to follow a stream running on the left flank of the trail. As you walk further you will reach a cluster of few herder’s shelters. The crossing of the stream from this point leads you to the final trail that takes you to the base of the Singay La. The camps will be set under the blanket of nature. Enjoy the night here
Day 7:Singay La Base to Lingshet
Lingshet is located at an elevation of 3,950 meters, but the descending trail has to be covered via an ascent up to the Singay La Top at 5,050 meters, and from there another thrilling walk leads you to another pass at 4,430 meters, the Kyukpa La. Follow the trail on the right side in the same direction to to a spot where a beautiful Hamlet unfolds before you.
Follow the trail from the Hamlet to cross a stream and indulge in an ascent to the Margo La at 4,500 meters. Enjoy the beguiling panoramic vista from the top of the pass before walking on the final descending trail leading you to the Lingshet Village. Pay a visit to the monastery before setting up the night camp in the village
Day 8: Lingshet to Snyertse.
Located in an artistic setting over an elevation of 3,800 meters, the walk to the Snyertse Village takes about 8 hours in total. Start the walk on a descending trail to a stream which you need to cross before walking on an ascending trail to reach the Hanuma La, 4,800 meters. Enjoy the breathtaking sight of the entire Lingshet Village from the top of the Hanuma La before resuming on the trail along the stream leading you to your campsite for the night, situated near a big tree
Day 9: Snyertse to Hanamur.
The destination today is Hanamur sitting at an altitude of 3,450 meters and the journey traverses through the amazing brilliance of nature and takes about 6 hours in total. Start the journey by crossing a stream and start walking on the ascending trail leaving the stream behind. The walk further leads you to a bridge which you need to cross before hiking on a steep ascend to Parfi La at 3,950 meters. The trail ahead from top of the Parfi La drops down to the Zanskar River and the river follows you all the way to Hanamur. The campsite lies adjacent to the river on a vast field. Spend the night in the cozy and serene atmosphere
Day 10: Hanamur to Pishu
The destination for the night, Pishu is located at a distance of 4 hours walk from Hanamur. The trail begins along the mesmerizing Zanskar River and runs all along in the same route to reach an intermediate point called Pidmo. A walk further on the same trail will lead you to the Pishu Campsite where you will be spending the night
Day 11: Pishu to Karsha.
Karsha is a beautiful place to be in and rests in an elevation of 3,650 meters. a short walk of around 4 hours today on a fairly easy trail leads you to Karsha. The trail begins in the same direction running along the beautiful Zanskar River. Follow the trail and as you proceed towards the destination, a small pretty village called the Rinam Village will fall along the way. Cross the village to walk further on the trail to finally reach Karsha Village. You can choose to visit the Karsha Monastery, quite popular in the region. Spend the night in the campsite beside the stream and below the Karsha Monastery
Day 12: Karsha to Padum.
The final destination in the journey, Padum is where you will be concluding your exciting trek. At an elevation of 3,610 meters, the walk to Padum is short and easy of just a couple of hours. The walk out of Karsha begins by crossing a river and following the well-marked trail. As you walk further, you will get to the Pibithing Village, and the religious monument on top of the hillock at the village is a delight. Padum is also known as the administrative headquarters of the Zanskar Division. As you reach Padum, explore the beautiful region and pay a visit to the famed monasteries called the Sani Monastery and Stakrimo Monastery. The night will be spent in a cozy hotel bed after so many days. Enjoy the night on a real bed after a long time in Padum
Day 13: Padum to Kargil
You are very near to the finishing line of the amazing journey, but the final day drive to Kargil will give you a remarkable experience. The road is brilliantly crafted delivering you the utmost beauty of the surrounding landscapes and cutting through the raw beauty of nature. A total drive of 10 hours on this extremely beautiful trail leads you to Kargil.On the way to Kargil on this incredible road, you will get to stop and amaze at the bewildering views from the Penze La at 4,502 meters. Enjoy the enthralling beauty of this place before resuming on the drive to get to Kargil. Final night in Kargil
Day 14: Back to Leh
So the journey is officially over as today you will be heading back to your very first location, Leh. A drive of around 7 hours on the amazing road leads you to Leh. As you reach Leh by afternoon, you can indulge in exploring the region or spend a leisure time strolling the beautiful streets. Spend the last night in Leh as the next day you will travel back to your hometown to resume with the daily chores of life
